Understanding the Spread
The spread is the difference between the buy and sell rate. It's how banks and cambios make money on foreign exchange.
A higher spread means you pay more when buying foreign currency, or get less when selling. It's a hidden cost that adds up, especially on larger amounts.
Spread Score Guide:
Low (<1%) - Good deal, low hidden cost
Medium (1-2%) - Average, typical spread
High (>2%) - Expensive, high hidden cost

π‘ Understanding FX Rates & Spreads
When Exchanging Currency:
- π Buying EUR? Look for the lowest sell rate - you pay less JMD per $1 EUR
- π° Selling EUR? Look for the highest buy rate - you get more JMD per $1 EUR
- β οΈ Check fees: Some institutions charge additional transaction fees on top of the rate
Understanding the Spread:
- π What is spread? The difference between buy and sell rates - it's the institution's profit margin
- β Low spread (<1%): Best value - the institution takes less profit from your exchange
- ! High spread (>2%): Hidden cost is higher - compare with other institutions first
π‘ Pro Tip: Always compare spreads between institutions. A "good" exchange rate with a high spread might actually cost you more!
